Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy argues that “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can boost feelings of confidence, and might have an impact on our chances for success. (Note: Some of the findings presented in this talk have been referenced in an ongoing debate among social scientists about robustness and reproducibility. Read Amy Cuddy’s response here:

  1. I was in a CVS & a stranger smiled at me as she passed me in the aisle. This was years ago, pre-covid. Her spirit was radiant, so much that it made me stop & reflect on how lovely a human being she was & how the kindness of strangers can be so impactful. Then I got in line behind her, & another customer walking by stopped, turned to her & thanked her for writing a particular book. She graciously thanked him, & I remember going back to my car after that & searching the book to see who she was. It was Amy Cuddy, & then I remembered watching this, & it was kind of a mindfxck. Anyway yeah she's super chill & beautiful. Love coming back to this talk.

  2. Jesse Singal's book "The Quick Fix" has a lot to say about this talk and the research. Bottom line is that similar to many results in social science, it just does not hold up to scrutiny. Power posing has no impact on your hormone levels, mental state, and ability to succeed.

Pequeños retoques pueden llevar a grandes cambios. Amy Cuddy. Amén. Amén. Amén.

  4. Hmmm such a shame that being tethered to a smartphone necessarily puts us into a low power pose… just look at the slumped bodies on the metro or on the bus. Leaving the phone behind gets your head up, looking out not down.

  5. Just the idea of power posing makes a difference in people who believe they are powerless. Even if the science is junk, the impact that I see in the students who will take the leap is worth the twenty minutes. I only need it to work once to change a life.

  6. Great. I'll be manspreading extra wide with my hands on my hips when I'm on the bus tomorrow. 👌😁
But seriously, I've been studying her stuff for a while and just discovered her Tedx talk.

  7. I was almost about to speed to the end and miss her personal revelation and story; Wow I am glad I didn't. I love endings like this and the lesson it gives.
