  1. Hi, thanks for your video. I’m trying to re purpose a shelving system to use out doors in my backyard. Besides paint, I’m using vinyl wallpaper, for the sides and back of the shelving system. The wood is some sort particle board. What should I use to seal it, and protect it from the Florida sun and rain? Will sealers adhere to the vinyl? Should I use a water based polyurethane first over the paint to seal the wood, and then apply the vinyl wallpaper? Will the wallpaper stick to the sealer? I also would rather have a matte finish, but don’t even know if any of this is possible. This is my first project…..so I am a bit lost. Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Can anyone have suggestions about window finishes? During summer it exposes to the sun at least 7 hours a day (40-45 ⁰C) and paint started flake off. First round workers ensured the clear finish won't get damaged the second round same with the paint and i started regret giving up from PVC windows 😔

  3. Hello Steve, I'm a shop teacher and have watched your channel for years, used your videos as lesson plans numerous times, and I always learn something new each time I watch. I was wondering if you could explain what are the best options for OUTDOOR finishes. What should we never use outside? What is the best choice for high moisture areas? What is the best option for high UV areas? Thanks!

  4. I m watching your channel a long time ago? I have a question for you? I used varathane fast dry stain on pine wood, the result is so good, next is which finish do must I apply? can I use acrylic based (water-based ) products on that varathane fast dry ( they are Urethane Modified Alkyd, the solvent is mineral spirits) or I must keep the golden rule, the base is oil and next is oil? Did you experiment with that topic? so Do I must use oil based polyurethane?

  6. Great, thanks, I learnt a lot. Although I don't think you said these finishes are for indoor use. I was about to buy lacquer for an outside bench until I saw that it's not suitable.

  7. Great channel, you've earned my sub.

I've been building furniture more often lately as people have been asking for some pieces. My question is what types of wood work best for certain finishes? I'm having trouble choosing the type of wood (based on what I have available to me; pine, birch, sande, and maple) and the kind of finishes that work best for each. And do you feel that pre-conditioning common wood or select pine helps a bit?

  9. Hi Steve great video – I have a kitchen table that needs to be refinished, it's noted but on the dull side. Can I just lightly get it ready and then just apply Minwax Finishing Paste Wax and how many coats?

  12. Sir, I want to ask a probably weird question: what finish should I use that won't seal the smell of the wood?
I have table top made of teak wood and a box inlaid with cinnamon wood. I want an easy clean/wipe on surface on them but I don't want the coating to block the wood aroma.

  13. Never, evr paint wood.Wood is billions and billions of hollow cells that transpire moisture; if you sealthe surface, which paint does occulusably, you do not allow the cells to transpire(breath) and you getbrot, flacking and rot. Just look at an old window frame or siding.Otherwise, I agree with much of the information.Marc.

  14. Personal experience: I've always struggled with finishing wood and paint in general. In addition, maintining bristle brushes has always been a huge challenge for me. I simply can't seem to do it right and always make a mess. I've found that wipe on danish oil is without question the easiest and simplest finish I've ever tried. I know Steve prefers spray laquer, but I always make a mess with spray cans, and I'm too impatient to wait for the coats to dry. Danish oil applied with a rag or foam brush feels like it gets done by itself.
