REVIEW: Everything Wrong With A Ford F150 5.4 Triton V8
As a parts counter guy I find Fords really frustrating. Chevy, you have a year, make, model, engine size, here's your part, and chances are that part fits the whole generation of GM vehicles with the same engine/body style. Ford? here's a dozen options for the same year and engine size. Oh, one year off, yeah that's not the same, oops. Yes, I'm exaggerating, and a generalization, since there some GMs like that, but it tends to be true. Maybe it's because so many people still daily drive late-90s trucks and that's when the F-150s and F-250s were really confusing, while the late 90s GM 1500s were all pretty much Vortec 5.7L (sure, 1999 and 2007 are annoying with GM trucks due to transition years)…
All that said, I own both a Ford and a Chevy – 99 Crown Vic with almost 150K and a 92 Chevy 1500 with almost 250K. Neither are perfect, but both are very well built and generally reliable. Both of those vehicles, it seems that transmissions are the weak points. Then again, that's literally the case with the automatic transmission in any vehicle.
I bought a 2004 3V and at 99,000 I took it to Ford for noise. They said is was normal but they really just wanted me to go past my 100,000 mile warranty which I did. The thing no mechanic will tell you is the fix is cam phaser lockouts and a sct tune. I have 6 , the 2004 being the worst. 2007 to 2010 is way better but I do lockouts as soon as they make noise. The 2v engines are the most durable v8 ever.. Before I owned one I thought the TBI Chevy engines , 351w and 460 ford were the most durable but my company trucks went from 200,000 miles to fully expecting 400,000 with the 4.6 / 5.4. I now have a 3.5 V6 with 269,000 and no issues. I use Hotshots stiction eliminator in all my engines. It will make your VVC, VCT or DOD work like a charm.
Now let me ask you a question. You talk about Ford and the truth is the truth but I never hear a Chevy man tell the truth about the horrible 99 and newer GM truck Steel and metal is pure shit. I do beach restoration and those trucks on the beach completely rust down in less than 3 years. I won’t tell you my experience but will tell you that Ft. Walton county bought several for beach patrol and the front suspension would rust of in 3 years. Brake lines and frames rusting through. And the 2007 and newer engines suck . So what’s the appeal and why not say that? None of my Fords do that.
I have 230 thousands miles v8 triton xlt not problem on miles only spark problem only t
My father had an fx4 (an off road edition) f150 with the 5.4 triton. He drove it from 03 when he got it new up till like 2019.
5.4. 3 valve are the big problem.
only ford ill own is pre 96 f100-f5+
The 5.4 is actually a solid engine when properly maintained. I stress properly maintained. She is not forgiving. All maintenance needs to be done at the correct intervals. Pain in the ass, really. Spark plugs are the least of the problems with this motor.
I have the 5.4 2 valve from 2003, and it's running strong at 280k…The spark plugs never came out, but I check them, and change them often…. the only issue has been the ignition coils sometimes don't seem to be on all the way, and I've even had to put pieces of rubber between the fuel line and the coil to hold it on tight…Outside of that it has exceeded expectations in terms of gas mileage, and speed…My truck seems so powerful, i love it..
The 5.4 3v is one big turd… chasing the problem down in this engine is a mother fudgerrr… has to be fords worst engine ever engineered. all owners will suffer from 5.4 syndrome at some point.
Had almost 300,000 on the long bed extend cab heavy half 5.4 3v before a guy in Chevy car decided he didn’t like the front fender
Bought a 08 Ford F-150 in February and sold it in September. Worst engine I’ve ever had to deal with
I use to like Ford trucks but they really put some junk engines I have a 2000 F-350 powerstroke with 150000 miles on it the body isn't to bad for Michigan I hate to get rid of it Ford doesn't make a diesel engine that good anymore
i made alot of money fixing spark plugs that blew out the heads. ford wanted stupid money to fix it.
My 3 valve went 195k pulling over it's rating 3 to 4 times a week 24/365.
I've had chevys dodges and fords and a bunch of each ones and I have drove the dog shit out then and I can honestly say that the chevy were a hold lot better and was more powerful held up better. And my 2nd pick would be dodges and I will never ever buy another ford and if I do it will be the 300 straight 6 the rest hell no
Can anyone recommend an extremely reliable make, model, year… 4×4 truck that when I do have to repair it I'm not running into these issues he's listed here? Nothing to new as I probably couldn't afford it. I currently have an 05 f150 supercrew 5.4L 3v with 176k on it. I think It currently has the hot idle knock from the cam phaser locking pin.
Last time i called the scrap yard for one of the 24V's…there was a 30 person wait list. If that isn't a sign of a great boat anchor…
I have a 2001 ford f-150 xlt triton 5.4 v8 4 door. Im trying to figure out why it keeps loosing poner if I put in New spark plugs, the coils,I do change of oil when it time to, and it still keeps looking power, and it does it when I stop at the light and when I go and step on the gas and it doesnt speed up the way it suppost to, and after a few minutes it speed up fast the way it suppost to.
Makes me glad my 06 has the 4.6L instead of the 5.4L
The fix for the 97-03 plugs is 25 ft/lbs of torque. The stupid ass timing, no cure for that.
"Derp let's put plastic tensioners on a chain."
"Hurr hurr yea dat'll wurk gud!"
If you don't have to worry about emmisions in your area, just drop the triton turd & put a 351 in. I'm wondering if there's an LS swap that can work if you have the compooper reprogrammed.
Love how ford circles the problem
ls swap you say lol
